Amen…whatever happened to rebellion? It was one of the most important values of my generation. Did we cave or something? Or was the next generation spooked? Or the world just washed over us. What happened to gen x? We came up with such promise, and then it was like we ceased to exist.

Why I’m a Korean/Chinese Buddhist (and Not a Less Spiritual/Religious Variant)

This time of year I feel the presence of the ancient ancestors, nobility, and magistrates. I sense the Boddhisatvas, and the gods of the Taoists, all the ancient gods and goddesses, spirits, and celestial beings of the Asian mainland. Chinese and Korean Buddhism is a syncretic mix of animism, shamanism, filial traditions, Taoist principles, Confucian-like rituals, and Buddhist awareness. It is specifically the religion of Buddhism that ultimately drew me into it, not the ideas or the concept of Enlightenment. I have never felt the presence of a human-like Christian god, and have, in fact, always been turned off by it, nor do I quite feel the presence of the pagan or heathen pantheons. But, the gods, spirits, and ancestors of the “East,” walk with me in a way few, if any, other classes of celestial beings do, and this is why I am a Buddhist, a Confucianist/Taoist/shamanic/animistic/ritualistic/praying/pantheistic/syncretic/classically Chinese/Korean “Buddhist.”

"Far more than these material things, the Chinese valued things of the mind. They could see the value of skill that could combine various materials to make a machine to produce goods quickly, but they thought more highly of the art of making it possible for human beings to live together in harmony and happiness. They valued wealth—the Chinese have always valued it—but they could see little usefulness in wealth that did not bring its owner satisfaction, a fuller enjoyment of life, and a sense of security in the esteem of his fellow-men. In these respects they were by no means sure that the way of the West was better."

A lot of this just comes down to effort. Adults criticize teenagers for being lazy, but they’re just as bad, if not worse. Adults think just working hard and taking care of things materially is enough, but that’s the basic. That’s part of having a family. Can’t do that, don’t have a family. So, the duty should be in communication, understanding, and mental support. People will find a way to physically survive. It’s the mental. Most people just have no ethical foundation to lead the life they’re leading. They have no idea what they’re costing themselves and society.
